Many organizations excel at course development and delivery but struggle to form close relationships with their C-suite which can result in suboptimal high-level support and funding. These organizations often have an unbalanced learning portfolio with little learning devoted explicitly or directly to achieving the highest–level goals of the organization.

In this session, Dave Vance, founder of Caterpillar University and the Center for Talent Reporting, will share an approach to ensure strategic alignment with the organization’s top goals and build strategic partnerships with goal owners. He will also share the basic tenets of running learning like a business, including the importance of setting specific, measurable goals, and executing the business plan for learning with discipline.

He will provide a step-by-step process to engage the CEO and senior leadership during the business planning process to identify strategic learning specifically created to help the organization achieve its highest-level goals. He will share how to reach agreement on planned impact and how to manage a partnership to deliver the promised results. He will also show how to share the data that senior leaders most want to see and how to speak their language.

Learning objectives:

  1. Identify strategic learning and assess whether your learning portfolio is properly balanced.

  1. Manage a process to create strategic learning and reach agreement on targets & roles and responsibilities.

  1. Create management reports with appropriate efficiency, effectiveness, and outcome measures to manage the learning and demonstrate results.
