Being a first-time learning leader is no small feat. New leaders may struggle with uncertainty and indecision as they venture into uncharted territory in their careers and are asked to make high-stakes decisions on a daily basis. Finding resources and guidance tailored to the unique needs of an L&D leader can be a time-consuming challenge because most leadership development content is not intended specifically for leaders of L&D teams. Furthermore, L&D leaders may lack an internal network of peers, especially if they lead the only L&D team in their organization. Developing yourself as a new L&D leader can unfortunately slip to the bottom of your to-do list when there are other urgent matters to deal with on the job such as hiring, competing for your organization’s resources, and maybe dealing with your own feelings of inadequacy if you’re struggling with the day-to-day responsibilities of what you thought was your dream job.

Facilitator Laurel Schulert modeled this session after her June 2023 TD at Work publication. This interactive workshop begins with participants identifying the traits that make them ideal candidates to lead L&D teams. This reflection is valuable whether participants aspire to hold the role someday, or whether they have recently been promoted and may be struggling with imposter syndrome. Having the confidence to pursue these opportunities (and the necessary skills to thrive in the role) is the first key to success. Next, we’ll discuss how to build a high performing L&D team, beginning with recruiting and selecting top talent and moving on to how to develop and retain superstar employees. Participants will then define critical elements of their team’s charter and will discover how their team’s work is essential to their organization’s strategy. Last, we’ll examine how to communicate the L&D team’s value to organizational stakeholders, so that others recognize the team as the empowered, effective, and essential group that it is.

This session will equip aspiring and new learning leaders with the necessary ingredients to build and maintain high performing L&D teams, and will empower learning leaders to thrive. The session format will be interactive and conversational, to allow for discussion and to encourage participants to reflect on how to apply this content to their individual needs. Laurel Schulert

Laurel Schulert is the Senior Director of Learning Experience at SAP Concur, where she leads an instructional design team that supports global revenue enablement. Prior to her career in instructional design, Laurel taught secondary English in North Carolina from 2008-2013 and was an adjunct professor of English as a Foreign Language at Wake Technical Community College from 2012-2014.

Laurel holds a Master of Science in Education in Learning Design and Technology from Purdue University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Eastern Michigan University. She has also earned the Master Performance Consultant, Project Management for Learning Professionals, and Microlearning certificates through the Association for Talent Development (ATD). In 2020, Laurel served as the President of the Ann Arbor Association for Talent Development (A2ATD), a local chapter of the international organization. Laurel was also invited to present at the 2023 and 2022 ATD International Conference & EXPO, the 2021 DevLearn conference, and wrote the June 2023 TD at Work guide, “A-List L&D Team, Assemble.”

When she is not at work, Laurel loves exploring her home state of Michigan, reading, doing yoga, and doing home improvement projects in the historic home she shares with her spouse and pets.
